Cut & Paste:
Have you ever had to copy a
really big letter or paragraph by typing from one file to another? Or from a web page
to an email? If so, you know it can be a very tedious job. Let your
mouse relieve your keyboard fingers for a minute. You can do what is called
"Cut & Paste" or Copy & Paste".
To C&P, you simply locate the text or
image or file that you wish to relocate or copy. For our example we are
going to work with the text here on this page. You will need to open a
word processor program or even the Microsoft Notepad installed on all
Windows machines by default. You can open Notepad by going to START /
PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES / NOTEPAD.
Once the Notepad window is open, come back to this
window and you can toggle between these two windows by clicking on
whichever window you need on the taskbar.
OK, place the mouse cursor at the beginning of the
text you wish to copy anywhere on this page. Click and hold the mouse button. Now, with the
mouse button still being held, drag your mouse across the text. You will
see the text being highlighted as you pass over it. When you get to the
end of the text you want to copy, release the mouse button.
Be sure not
to click again because it will unselect the text you just selected.
Instead, place the cursor anywhere INSIDE of the blue, highlighted text
and right-click the mouse. You will then be given a menu. You can now
choose either "Copy" or "Cut". The difference between the two is that when you Cut &
Paste, the text will not be left in the original document from which you
took the text. You literally cut it out, as opposed to just copying
it.
Once you have Cut or Copied the text, you need to
put it somewhere now. Go to the Notepad window you opened earlier and place the cursor where you want to place the text
that you copied and right-click the mouse. When the menu appears, you
will choose PASTE.
Whallah! You have done your first of countless
C&Ps. Now, if you go to another location on the document and
right-click and choose PASTE again, you will notice that you can paste
it over and over again. This is very handy if you have to retype
something many many times. But remember, once you copy or cut something
else, the first item will be lost. You can only keep one item at a time
in the "CLIPBOARD" (this is actually where your computer keeps
the one item that you are C&Ping.)
