Drag & Drop:
Another very useful tool is an
action called Drag & Drop. This is when you literally drag an item
from one place to another and drop it where you want it. A good example
of this being used is if you want to rearrange some of the items on your
DESKTOP (the computer start screen, not the top of your desk furniture).
Usually, your computer will come set up in the standard way and it is
set to arrange your icons automatically. You can change this by
right-clicking anywhere on the desktop and when the menu appears, look
where it says auto-arrange. If it has a check mark next to it, click it
once. This will deselect auto-arrange and will allow you to place your
icons or files wherever you want them.
Now that you have disabled auto-arrange,
click on the MY COMPUTER icon and hold the button. Now, with the
button still held down, move the mouse around the screen. Do you see the
icon moving with it? Now release the mouse button. If you were
successful in disabling the auto-arrange, the icon should be staying
wherever you put it. Now you can Drag & Drop. This will come in very
handy when you want to place a file in a folder somewhere or if you want
to drag an unwanted item to the RECYCLE BIN. To learn to drag a
window around or to resize it, go here.
You can practice Drag & Drop by going to
the DESKTOP and creating a new folder and dragging the new empty folder
into the MY DOCUMENTS folder or any folder you want to drag it to. You
can go here if you don't know how to CREATE
A NEW FOLDER. Good luck.
